only 13 percent were named among the best. More than 15,506 nursing homes were evaluated. “We provide exceptional care in a home environment,” said Renee Cunningham, the director of the hospital's long-term care unit, noting that most of the credit should be given to her staff. Students operate Student-Run Credit Unions - Traverse City Record Eagle

Through the interview process it's a good time to talk to the kids about speaking with adults, shaking hands and eye contact. Dompierre recalled a student once dumping out a winter hat filled with change. "The first week I did it, I got like $5 and it was all pennies," Stone said. "We talk about customer service, confidentiality and what it means to work with sensitive information," Dompierre said. It is a first-job experience, so we make them do a full-on application and interview process before they're trained. "We wanted to be sure," branch manager Ali Stone said. Schibelhut said he's not saving up for anything in particular, but likes it when he earns interest. More than $96,000 has been collected in the seven years of the program and a celebration is planned when the program hits the $100,000 mark sometime in the fall. Many of the Westwoods participants said they applied to work because of a love of math — or simply for the challenge. "We'll have a company meeting if we're having issues during deposit days if we need to talk about some reminder things. "Then they accept deposits from other students. Students apply for jobs, go through an interview process and undergo training. Westwoods, which typically handles a dozen on average, had 19 deposits on Friday. "It's a real fun way to get a head start," Westwoods Bookkeeper Samantha Van Wingen said. "They are real accounts, so they earn interest when they hit a certain dollar amount," Dompierre said. Branch manager Amari Rosenburg figured out she either wrote down the deposit wrong or it was counted wrong. Westwoods first grader Landon Schibelhut, age 6½, made a $10 deposit on Friday afternoon. Once or twice a month, a "Deposit Day" is held for fellow students. "It's a student-run, pop-up credit union. Since they deal with student deposits, handling a lot of change comes with the territory. "It's nice to give kids an opportunity to connect to the community, as well as an opportunity to learn about money and saving at an early age," Westwoods Principal Dan Tiesworth said. TBA Credit Union staff handle deposits back at the office. Schibelhut said he makes deposits "mostly all the time. "The weirdest thing today was Wesley had three $1 coins," Rosenburg said of Friday's Deposit Day. TBA Credit Union has a team of three — Lydia Clemons, Jessica Cushman-Dunlop and Lorri Wolf — who supervise at Deposit Day. "They run the show," said TBA Credit Union Marketing Director Christie Dompierre. Dompierre estimated the Student-Run Credit Union has "employed" more than 1,200 kids during the history of the program. After making a deposit, students play an educational game with the marketing team, like 'Needs versus Wants' or 'Income versus Expense' before getting to choose a small prize. "These elementary students are processing transactions pretty quickly, because they have to balance out drawers and balance out with their bookkeeper," Dompierre said. Members of the Westwoods Elementary Student-Run Credit Union program figured out the discrepancy, verified it with the depositor and straightened the situation out before the buses pulled up front. Dompierre said busy schools like Central Grade School, which has a "shift change" to handle demand, can have more than 20 deposits during a 30-45 minute period. "One time we lost $200 and everyone freaked out," said Westwoods fifth grader and teller Brooke Westenbarger. The Student-Run Credit Union has about 400 account holders actively making deposits this school year. "We had one kid come (carrying) his (empty) puke bucket with his deposit (in the other hand) because he had the flu, was in the office and his mom hadn't picked him up yet, but he really wanted to make his deposit," she said. In its seventh year, the Student-Run Credit Union hires and trains students to work as branch managers, tellers, bookkeepers, computer operators and marketing representatives. Westwood Elementary is one of 15 area elementary and middle schools that participates in the TBA Credit Union's Student-Run Credit Union program. After students make a deposit, it is recorded in the student's deposit book and eventually in a computer. Source: www.record-eagle.com

Opportunity Curriculum eye-opening for students - Traverse City Record Eagle

“We wanted to close that gap,” Stuedemann said. Expansion to additional grade levels and other schools may be possible, she added. “We were afraid that misinformation and missing information could cause kids to think that different career opportunities weren’t obtainable for them,” Stuedemann said. Field trips also dotted the curriculum to give students a deeper understanding of the future opportunities available to them. “We wanted to make it so that all students will have early exposure and guidance from caring adults as to how what they do in the classroom — those skills and habits they practice on a daily basis — relate to bigger, lifelong goals. Board of education Secretary Doris Ellery offered her support for the program and suggested it should continue to the middle school level to fully gauge the curriculum’s efficacy. TRAVERSE CITY — A pilot program at Traverse City Area Public Schools is showing some positive results. And the “grab-and-go” curriculum model allowed teachers to incorporate the lessons into their daily teachings without too much added work, Stuedemann added. The new curriculum — organized by Stuedemann, school counselors, elementary teachers and other community members — aims to expose young students to potential opportunities once they receive their diploma. “The idea and the importance with this comes from the understanding that for many students there’s a gap between what’s happening in the classroom and where they’re going to be after high school,” Stuedemann told a board curriculum committee on... Stuedemann said officials — now that the year is coming to a close — will be soliciting feedback from students, parents and staff to set a direction for next year’s curricular model. About 180 students participated this year, starting with career awareness in fourth grade and moving to more actionable planning in fifth grade. Kristin Stuedemann, assistant sixth-grade principal at West Middle School, this week showcased “a little-known gem” gaining momentum at Blair and Traverse Heights elementary schools: The Opportunity Curriculum.
