Education programming, students play important roles for Inland Seas - Traverse City Record Eagle

“We need people who trust science,” Williams said. Williams and other ISEA officials will review the past year during Tuesday’s presentation, while outlining 2017 goals and projects. “We are helping show the students how to be scientists in every single one of our programs. Beau Nickerson, a 16-year-old junior at Kingsley High School, recalled a trip last summer when he made friends, watched the boat’s captain and cook play guitar and fiddle and compiled information to show parents and help researchers. “Most people won’t really have an opportunity to go out on a boat with professionals and find information that is actually going to be used later,” Nickerson said. Some of the most valuable learning experiences for Suzi Owen’s sixth-grade students at St. Mary’s School in Lake Leelanau happen aboard Inland Seas. Students conduct the work associated with the research that brought these findings to the surface, Williams said, from data collection to determining the state of the Grand Traverse Bay. Owens teaches geography, science and math at St. Mary’s and brings her students to set sail for a day to complement her geography and science lessons. “They are fully integrated into the research we do. All that work is done by the students themselves,” said Jeanie Williams, Inland Seas lead scientist and education specialist. Some of the students’ research found the invasive round goby continues to dominate fish populations, benefiting some local species while harming others, Williams said. TRAVERSE CITY — A Lake Michigan sailing trip for Katie Nicholson meant nights spent on the deck looking at the stars, making friends and days conducting invaluable Great Lakes research. Her class learned about schooner safety and quickly split into groups, with each learning about a particular subject — like fish, pollution and others — before teaching what they learned to other groups during their trip last September. Round goby populations outcompete smaller feeder fish and lead to declines of the Johnny darter and others, while predator fish — like lake trout and bass — likely benefit from the growing buffet of the goby. Her group collected zebra mussels and researched the small aquatic species, providing information that will be used by other Great Lakes researchers. Nicholson and more than 4,000 other students sailed with the ISEA or participated in other programs through the organization’s educational efforts in 2016. Program successes and data collected by the student scientists will be highlighted during... Thousands of students like Nicholson helped collect data that shows Great Lakes clarity dropped slightly, while numbers of invasive species like round goby increased — information local scientists will use to track the health of the watershed. Nicholson, a 16-year-old senior at Alpena High School, hit the water with Inland Seas Education Association officials for a three-day voyage last summer aboard the schooner Inland Seas with other students to collect information and learn about... Bookkeeper accused of diverting $100K - Traverse City Record Eagle

"We've all had to pull together and fill in some spots," Thoreson said. Two of the Flaskas' five children have long worked at the Maple City company. "This embezzlement took place over the course of about six years," he said. "(Taylor) did a lot of the work (in) the bookkeeping areas, so we've had to learn a lot of that. TRAVERSE CITY — Family has flocked back to Maple City to run a decades-old business at the center of a suspected embezzlement scheme. Authorities contend Taylor "repeatedly and regularly stole funds from her trusting employer through the use of fraudulant checks," court records state. I would say we just pulled together, stepped up. ". Taylor, of Empire, will be charged with embezzlement of more than $100,000, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, in 86th District Court on March 28, according to court documents. The embezzlement charge did little to sidetrack Leelanau Redi-Mix employees from tackling the business' many tasks — from pouring concrete, to excavation, to installing septic tanks. Borkovich hinted that the total amount of money diverted from Leelanau Redi-Mix was much greater than $100,000. "It's a lot," he said. "They suspected that one of their employees who worked in their payroll (and) accounting department was mishandling money, possibly stealing money," Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich said. Leelanau Redi-Mix owners asked Leelanau County sheriff's detectives in July to investigate a suspected embezzlement at the company. Taylor was a "trusted book keeper and accountant" at Leelanau Redi-Mix for many years, said Leelanau County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Doug Donaldson. Authorities suspect more than $100,000 was diverted from Leelanau Redi-Mix revenues by the company's former bookkeeper, Carolyn Denise Taylor, 52. Taylor worked for the company — which still is owned by founders Marilyn Flaska, 85, and Charles... Source: www.record-eagle.com

TNT finds suspected meth lab in Interlochen camper - Traverse City Record Eagle

Two children were located on the property during the search and were removed by CPS workers and sent to Munson Medical Center for a possible exposure to meth, the release states. TRAVERSE CITY — A suspected methamphetamine lab was uncovered after Child Protective Services alerted Traverse Narcotics Team detectives to an Interlochen home. Detectives served the warrant in the early morning hours Friday and recovered numerous chemicals, components and apparatus used to manufacture meth inside a camper on the property, the release stated. Detectives sought a search warrant on a 28-year-old man and his 22-year-old girlfriend, both of Interlochen, to search for meth and meth-making items at their Betsie River Road home on Thursday, a release stated.
