By the end of the trip, I was happy to drive five or six hours in a day, as the open vistas on either side slowly changed. When an American says 'awesome', they might mean anything from 'quite good' to 'see you later'. On the other hand, travelling in an RV is not quite what is conjured up by the words 'camper van'. like paddleboarding on Bear Lake - known as the Caribbean of the Rockies because of its beautiful turquoise blue. for the Americans, an RV is THE way to go on a family holiday. However many pictures you may have seen, you cannot fail to be impressed as puddles boil and steam, then suddenly, belching from under the ground with a hissing and rumbling sound, a jet of hot steam and water comes shooting 10, 100, 200ft into... It is old - 17million years, in fact - and it was faithful. Despite the fact that only hard-sided, bearproof RVs are allowed in campsites - no soft nylon or canvas. So when I say this trip was awesome, I mean it in the old-fashioned sense of the word. And, as someone who usually considers an hour's drive too much effort, I have to say that it wasn't so far off heaven for this old geezer either. Time for more canoeing, this time in proper 'Canadianstyle' single-paddle canoes. dispatchCustomEvent=function(n){(function(n){function t(n,t){t=t||{bubbles:. Like birdwatching at the spectacular Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, where my 13-year-old had to shut up for an afternoon. Plus, in an RV, of course, you can stop in a lay-by - next to a massive canyon - press your kitchen-expanding button and cook up a hot meal before driving on. Another big slice of Awesome. You can't blame the bears, really, when they have a space as big and as wonderful as this to roam in. We had flown into Salt Lake City and picked up our RV there. After eating beans, barbecued chicken and corn muffins in a barn while a band of cowboy musicians played songs such as Ghost Riders In The Sky and Yippie-Aye-Ay, we went to the rodeo, which brought even an old London geezer like me to my feet... Created in 1872, Yellowstone is one of the first and finest examples of Nature Conservation. On one long drive in our RV, my 13-year-old son and I counted at least 150 of them. Salt Lake is the nearest big city to Yellowstone, but it is still a helluva long way. On the subject of camp fires, it is definitely worth visiting the town of Cody, a few hours' drive out the other side of Yellowstone. There were horizons wider than you've ever seen, vast lakes steaming with geothermal activity, forests tumbling down the sides of blue mountains, breathtaking canyons and a waterfall twice the height of Niagara - the 1,000ft Lower Yellowstone Falls. It would be possible to go through Yellowstone Park - the first of America's National Parks - in a car, or even on a Harley-Davidson, of which there were hundreds on the roads, and to stay in motels on the way. In fact, I'd recommend taking one - to a 13-year-old, an RV is a slice of heaven (my son adored ours despite his failed attempts at plugging its bendy sewage pipe into the correct hole at the campsite). And as my partner, son and I drove through the wide open spaces of Utah and Wyoming to get to Yellowstone, I felt for the first time ever in the States that I was getting something close to respect. an RV is cool to a 13-year-old boy in a way a camper van could never be. An RV is awesome. The Spirit of '76: See America First, in This GMC Motorhome - Car and Driver (blog)

Camping, as an American pastime, dates back at least as far as Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone at the dawn of the 1900s, but it really didn’t ramp up until the 1960s, arguably reaching its zenith in the 1970s. Combine that with the bicentennial... Source: blog.caranddriver.com

New RV trend: Lightweight camper trailers - USA TODAY

In this case, this 5th wheel trailer gains significant extra dining and living space through a slide out. Built on all-aluminum frames, the inTech trailers have less headspace inside than traditional campers, making them easier to store inside a residential garage. This camping trailer wins the prize for the lightest model on display at the Denver show. The use of modern materials means many small trailers can offer amenities once found only in larger campers. Many manufacturers now offer similarly sized trailers, using lightweight materials, small propane-powered coolers and stoves, and flat-screen televisions, to keep the weight down. Once expanded, this Sylvan Sport Go camping trailer can sleep several people but still weighs less than 900 pounds. This TigerMoth trailer is basically a queen-sized-bed on wheels, with a slide out for a cooking area and racks to hold sporting equipment, and sells for about $12,000. It weighs just 900 pounds. Small trailers like this one provide a modicum of creature comforts, including protection from the elements and insects, while being light enough to tow by most vehicles. And while the RV lifestyle may not be for everyone, millions of Americans enjoy the chance to hit the open road, visiting national parks and small towns across the country. The Mercedes work van chassis has become a popular platform to modify into a small RV that requires no special training or skill to drive, and fits into most parking spaces. Airstream trailers, with their characteristic silver skin, command a premium on the RV market, regardless of their size. With wood-laminate floors, carpet and counters that would be right at home in a normal house, these luxury RVs are a far cry from the utilitarian trailers campers once used. Larger 5th-wheel trailers like this one are often winterized, extending the camping season for several months. And it weighs just 1,500 pounds and costs around $12,000. Costa Rica Jeep – Alajeula, Costa Rica: Travelers looking for a more adventurous experience should look no further than this fully equipped 4x4 Jeep Wrangler/camper rental. A few aisles away from the Airstreams, Rich Schnippel shows off his inTech RV trailers, which are smaller and even lighter than the Basecamp. Experts say the nation's trend toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles is leading to slowing sales of large 5th wheel trailers like this one, which usually require a beefy truck engine to haul. Small motorhomes also remain popular, many of them built on the Mercedes van platform. Like many small caper trailers, this one is designed to be pulled behind a car or small SUV, and doesn't need a powerful pickup or full-size SUV to haul it around. Weighing in at less than 2,000 pounds, this small camping trailer has space to haul motorcycles or a small side-by-side or quad bike, with a popout sleeping area on the other side.
