Ticked off: Lyme disease to be an issue this season - Rockford Register Star

Ticks aren't born with it. they get it when they bite a small animal such as a mouse, then eventually can transmit it by biting a deer, a dog or a human. "I expect those numbers to rebound this year," Beckmann said. "Instead of coming out right about now, I know people who were getting bit by ticks the first week of March," Beckmann said. Ticks go through multiple larval stages before reaching adult status and will feed throughout winter before emerging as adults. Rhonda Freund (left) and Taggart Venegas (center) watch as Sean Beckmann, an associate professor of biology at Rockford University, holds a trap with a ground squirrel on Friday, May 26, 2017, at Distillery Road Conservation Area in Belvidere. "I think what happened is the burn actually either controlled the tick population or resulted in some of the older rodents dying out. Winnebago County health officials will produce more educational materials this year in an effort to raise awareness of the danger among those spending time outside and prompt them to take necessary precautions. Beckmann and a group of undergraduates collected rodent specimens to test for Lyme disease. If winter had been colder and lasted longer, more adult ticks would have died, but that doesn't seem to be the case this season, said Sean Beckmann, assistant professor of biology at Rockford University. "What we want to do is educate people," said Todd Marshall, director of environmental health for the Winnebago County Health Department. The decline, Beckmann said, was likely the result of routine controlled burns affecting last year's data because it either affected the tick population or killed off older rodents. Beckmann leads a group of undergraduate researchers who test prairie rodents for the disease at Distillery Road Conservation Area near the Boone-Winnebago county line. ROCKFORD — This past winter's warm weather is expected to result in a larger-than-normal tick population, increasing the chances that humans will come into contact with Lyme disease, health officials say. In 2016, they revealed that their 2015 research had found Lyme disease in meadow voles and prairie voles, as well as in meadow jumping mice and ground squirrels, two grassland rodents that weren't previously known to carry Lyme. Lyme disease was found in 38 percent of the 213 rodents collected in 2015. Data collected last year and released in March showed almost 22 percent of the 194 rodents caught had tested positive for Lyme disease. Source: www.rrstar.com

Annual lake fly hatch leaves mess around Lake Winnebago - Fox11online.com

And now, we've got a relatively light hatch. "You shake off before you go into the house," Olson said. "It can get pretty nasty," Olson said. It was the annual hatching of lake flies. "We're used to them, sure," Willer said. Just down the road, Brett Olson says a light hatch is fine with him. You can see them around, but they're not pestering yet," he said. "You get up close, you can see these little green dots all over that they leave on the siding that we'll have to wash off here," said Bob Willer. Biologists say many of the bugs showed up over the weekend, and the female flies have just a couple of days to lay their eggs on the water. On Sunrise Bay Road in the Town of Neenah, tiny lake flies are leaving their mark. "Normally by Mother's Day, they're just one on top of one another. In the meantime, residents on this part of the Winnebago shoreline will continue to cope. Willer has lived on Lake Winnebago for 40 years. "Like a lot of things, they are running maybe a little bit late this year because of the spring weather we've had," said Ed Culhane of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The eggs eventually grow into red worms, a prime food source for many fish on the Lake Winnebago system, including sturgeon. They typically emerge from the Lake Winnebago system around Mother's Day. This classic work on the Winnebago Indian tribe remains the single best authority on the subject. Based on Paul Radin's field work in 1908?13, The Winnebago Tribe was originally published as an annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1923. It is distinguished by a number of first-person accounts by Winnebago informants and by the thoroughness with which Radin discusses Winnebago history, archaeology, material culture, social customs, education, funeral and burial rites, warfare,...

The land that is now called Wisconsin has a place in weather history. Its climate has ranged from tropical to polar over hundreds of millions of years--and even today, that's the seeming difference between July and January here. In recent years, world climate changes have drawn more attention than at any other time in history. What we once called "crazy weather," just a few years ago, is now beginning to be seen as a part of a logical and, in part, predictable pattern, an awesome natural force that we must deal with if man is to avoid disaster of unprecedented proportions. Climates of Hunger is a book of paramount importance for our time. It will be essential reading not only for professionals in the field—including...
